On the proud occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of India. This significant day celebrates India’s steadfast commitment to democracy, constitutional values, and the protection of human dignity — principles that continue to inspire people far beyond its borders.

As a Tibetan living in exile in the United Kingdom, and as the Founder-Chair of the Global Alliance for Tibet & Persecuted Minorities, I wish to express my profound gratitude to India for its historic compassion and unwavering support for the Tibetan people. Since the arrival of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in exile in 1959, India has generously provided refuge and dignity to over 100,000 Tibetan refugees. For nearly seven decades, India has enabled Tibetans to preserve our culture, spiritual heritage, and identity in freedom. This act of moral courage and humanity will forever be remembered with deep respect and appreciation. Dharamsala is the headquarters of Tibet’s government-in-exile, also known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).

India’s continued support also serves as a reminder that the China–Tibet conflict remains unresolved. Tibet continues to remain under the illegal occupation of Communist China, and the repercussions of this injustice are not confined to Tibet alone. India itself continues to experience instability and repeated incursions along its northern frontier adjoining Tibet, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable and peaceful resolution.

Historically, a free and peaceful Tibet functioned as a natural buffer and zone of stability in the Himalayan region. The restoration of Tibet’s rightful status — achieved through wisdom, dialogue, and strategic foresight — would not only fulfil the aspirations of the Tibetan people but also contribute meaningfully to long-term regional peace, environmental security, and broader global stability.

On this auspicious day, I pray for the enduring friendship between the peoples of India and Tibet — two  ancient civilisations bound by shared values of compassion, non-violence, and spiritual depth. I sincerely hope that New Delhi will continue to exercise moral leadership and strategic wisdom in aiding the Tibetan people’s just cause, thereby helping to restore peace and stability for the region and beyond.

With deep respect and hope,
